Pairs of Apostles in Dispute and Christ and the Doubting Thomas (1477-1482)
Luca Signorelli (c. 1445-1523)
Italian Renaissance Style
Basilica of Santa Casa, Loreto, Italy

Explanation: The six paintings above depict the apostles in dispute, as they were several times until Christ's teaching and example took firm control of their minds and hearts. The sixth painting, of Christ convincing Thomas of his resurrection, was one of the last disputes to be settled among the disciples; for until then, Thomas was in dispute with all the other disciples about the reality of Christ's resurrection.

Luke 22:24-30

24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But you shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that does serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sits at meat, or he that serves? is not he that sits at meat? but I am among you as he that serves. 28 You are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father has appointed unto me; 30 That you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
