Carl Heinrich Bloch (1834-1890)
Neoclassical Style, Eckersberg Tradition

Explanation: On Friday of the Passion Week, after his betrayal and arrest, Jesus was tried by the Jewish authorities prior to his first trial before Pilate. In the midst of these trials before the Jewish authorities came Peter's denial of Christ - one of the most poignant stories in Scripture.

Jesus' Trial Before Annas

Matthew 26:57a And they that had laid hold on Jesus Luke 22:54a took him, John 18:13 and led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. John 18:14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
John 18:19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. John 18:20 Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. John 18:21 Why ask you me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. John 18:22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answer you the high priest so? John 18:23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smite you me?
John 18:24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest Luke 22:54b and brought him into the high priest's house. Mark 14:53c and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

Peter's Denial of Jesus in the House of Caiaphas

John 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus [Matthew 26:58a , Mark 14:54a, Luke 22:54c afar off], and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. John 18:16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. Mark 14:54b even into the palace of the high priest:
Luke 22:55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. John 18:18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. Matthew 26:58c and (he) sat with the servants, to see the end. Mark 14:54c and warmed himself at the fire.
John 18:17 Then said the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Are not you also one of this man's disciples? He said, I am not. John 18:25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Are not you also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
Matthew 26:69 Now Peter sat without in the palace [Mark 14:66 beneath]: and a damsel [Mark 14:66b one of the maids of the high priest] came unto him (and) Luke 22:56a beheld him as he sat by the fire [Mark 14:67b warming himself,] and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. You also were with [Mark 14:67b Jesus of Nazareth] of Galilee. Luke 22:57 And he denied him [Matthew 26:70a before them all], saying, Woman, I know him not. Mark 14:68b I know not, neither understand I what you say. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
Luke 22:58a And after a little while Matthew 26:71 when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him [Mark 14:69b again], and [Mark 14:69c began to say] unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. Mark 14:69d This is one of them. Luke 22:58 And another (man) saw him, and said, You are also of them. Matthew 26:72 And again he denied with an oath, [Luke 22:58a Man, I am not]. I do not know the man.
Luke 22:59a And about the space of one hour after John 18:26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did not I see you in the garden with him? Mark 14:70b And they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely you are one of them: for you are a Galilaean, and your speech agrees thereto, Matthew 26:73b for your speech betrays you. Luke 22:59b And another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. John 18:27 Peter then denied again: Matthew 26:74 then began he to curse and to swear, saying, Luke 22:60a Man, I know not what you say. Mark 14:71b I know not this man of whom you speak. Luke 22:60b And immediately, Mark 14:72a the second time, Luke 22:60c while he yet spoke, the cock crew. Luke 22:61a And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. Matthew 26:75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Mark 14:72c Before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice. Mark 14:72d And when he thought thereon, Luke 22:62 Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

Jesus' Trial Before the Sanhedrin and Caiaphas

Luke 22:66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him [Jesus] into their council, Matthew 26:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; Mark 14:55b and found none. Matthew 26:60b yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. Mark 14:56 For many bore false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together. Mark 14:57 And there arose certain [ones] - - [Matthew 26:60c two false witnesses] - - and bore false witness against him, saying, Mark 14:58 We heard [Matthew 26:61a this fellow] say, [Matthew 26:61 I am able to destroy the temple of God], (and) I will destroy this temple that is made with hands; [Matthew 26:61b and (I am able) to build it in three days]; and within three days I will build another made without hands. Mark 14:59 But neither so did their witness agree together. Mark 14:60 And the high priest priest [Matthew 26:62a arose, and] stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answer you nothing? what is it which these witness against you? Matthew 26:63 But Jesus held his peace [Mark 14:61b and answered nothing]. And [Mark 14:c again] the high priest [Mark 14:61c asked him, and] answered and said unto him, I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God, [Mark 14:61d the Blessed]. Luke 22:67a Tell us. Luke 22:67b And he said unto them, If I tell you, you will not believe: Luke 22:68 And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. Luke 22:69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Luke 22:70a Then said they all, Are you then the Son of God? Matthew 26:64a Jesus said unto him, Mark 14:62a I am: Matthew 26:64b You have said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Matthew 26:65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now you have heard his blasphemy. Luke 22:71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth. Matthew 26:66 What think you? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. Mark 14:64c And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
Luke 22:63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, Matthew 26:67 Then did they spit in his face, [Mark 14:65b and covered his face,] and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands, Luke 22:64 And when they had blindfolded him, [Mark 14:65c the servants] struck him on the face [Mark 14:65d with the palms of their hands], and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you? Luke 22:65 And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him. Mark 15:1a And straightway [Matthew 27:1a when the morning was come, all] the chief priests held a consultation with the elders [Matthew 27:1b of the people] and scribes and the whole council, Matthew 27:1c took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
