The Apparition of Christ to the Three Marys (c. 1600)

Explanation: On Sunday of the Passion Week, as the morning wore on, after the women visited the tomb, after Mary magdalene reported her mistaken idea that someone had moved the Lord's body, and after the women who lingered at the tomb saw angels who told them that Jesus was risen, the women returned to the city, and Jesus met them on the way. They reported the words of the angels and of Jesus to the disciples. Luke says that Mary Magdalene was part of those who reported to the disciples; but, as noted, Magdalene reported earlier, and the other women reported a bit later. (The painting above depicts the contrary view that Christ appeared to all three Marys at once). However, the disciples doubted all that they heard (positive or negative); but Peter and John, as will be seen in the next section, ran to see for themselves.
