     Explanation: In Psalm 149 the Psalmist encourages Israel to sing a new song to the LORD for his deliverance and his judgment upon their enemies. It is a Psalm which promises the ultimate triumph of God's people, hence the choice of the painting above, titled "Hope."

     The Psalmist exhorts Israel to sing a new song to the LORD and praise him joyfully in the congregation of the saints because he made them and he is their king (1-2). They should praise him in the dance and sing praises with the timbrel and harp because the LORD takes pleasure in his people and will beautify the meek with salvation (3-4). They should be joyful and sing upon their beds (5). The high praises of God should be in their mouth and a two edged sword in their hand to execute vengeance and punishments upon the heathen, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, and to execute the judgment written. All of his saints have this honor (6-7).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FIVE OF FIVE:

Psalms 107-150.

Psalm 149

1 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
