SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no days will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: Exodus 22 deals mainly with matters of ownership, relationships, and influence within the community. A thief must repay five-fold or four-fold if he kills or sells the animal he stole. If he is stricken and dies while breaking and entering, no blood will be shed for him; but if he is killed later, the killer is guilty of murder. If the thief cannot repay, he will be sold to pay his debt. If a stolen beast is found in his possession, he must pay double for it. (1-4). If someone lets his animal graze in another's field or vineyard, he must make restitution from the best of his produce (5). If someone starts a fire which consumes stacked or standing grain, he must make full restitution (6). In cases of breach of trust, the animal or goods which are stolen or lost must be repaid double by the thief (7-9). If an animal or article which is being held in trust is accidentally injured or damaged, the trustee does not need to make restitution (10-13). Compensation is due to the owner of anything which is entrusted to another if it is injured or dies, unless the owner is with it at the time (14-15).
A man must marry a betrothed virgin whom he seduces, unless her father forbids the union, in which case the seducer must pay the bride-price (16-17).
A sorceress must be executed (18).
Bestiality is punishable by death (19).
Anyone who sacrifices to any god other than the LORD will be executed (20).
Sojourners, widows, and the fatherless must not be mistreated because the LORD will take deadly vengeance for them (21-24). No interest may be charged for a loan to an Israelite; and a cloak taken in pledge must be returned before sundown; otherwise God will hear his cry (25-27).
You must not curse God or the ruler of your people (28). Offerings from the harvest must be given promptly; and the firstborn of men and animals belong to the LORD (29-30). Israelites must be consecrated to the LORD and must not eat anything torn by the beasts of the field; it shall be thrown to the dogs (31).

[ Illustration: The paintings above illustrate three key subjects in Exodus 22: robbery, virginity, and sorcery. They speak to the dignity of property, persons, and God. The First Image depicts violent theft. The Second Image is a tribute to virginity. The Third Image depicts a particular form of sorcery or magic called fortune-telling. This painting depicts charlatanism; the Scriptural sanctions in today's chapter are against concourse with demonic powers. But both forms of fortune telling are condemned by Scripture. ]

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

in Exodus = Instruction for the People in General (or "THE VISITS") (Ex 19:1 - Ex 40:38) - 1446 - 1445 B.C. Sinai

1 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. 2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. 3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution [ to repay he shall repay]; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 4 If the theft be certainly found [to be found it is being found] in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.
6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution [to repay he shall repay].
7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. 8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be bought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods. 9 For all manner of trespass, Whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
10 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: 11 Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. 12 And if it be stolen [to be stolen it is being stolen] from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. 13 If it be torn in pieces [to be torn to pieces it is being torn to pieces], then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.
14 And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good [to repay he shall repay]. 15 But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire.
16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her [to pay bride price he shall pay bride price] to be his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuse [to refuse he is refusing] to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
19 Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death to be put to death he shall be put to death].
20 He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. 22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 23 If thou afflict them in any wise [abasing you abase them], and they cry at all [crying they cry] unto me, I will surely hear [hearing I shall hear] their cry; 24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. 26 If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge [to take pledge you are taking pledge], thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: 27 For that is his coverering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.
28 Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.
29 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me. 30 Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it me.
31 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.
