SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no days will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: In Exodus 24 the LORD told Moses to bring Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders to the mountain to worship from afar, leaving the rest of the officials and the people behind (1-2). Before going to see the LORD, Moses wrote down all the rules of the LORD contained in Exodus chapters 20, 21, 22, and 23 and presented them to the people. The people then agreed to obey these rules. Moses wrote these rules down; and he rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up 12 pillars -- one for each of the 12 tribes of Israel. He then had young men offer burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD. Moses then collected the blood in basins and sprinkled (or threw) half of it against the altar. Moses then took the Book of the Covenant which he had just written and read it to the people. The people again promised to obey it. Moses then took the blood and sprinkled (or threw) it on the people, calling it the blood of the covenant (3-8).
After establishing the covenant, Moses and the others went up and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was a pavement of clear sapphire; the LORD spared their lives, and they all ate and drank before God (9-11). The LORD then told Moses to come to the mountain and wait to receive the stone tablets upon which the LORD had written his commandments. So Moses took Joshua and left the others, referring any disputes to Aaron and Hur (12-14). Moses then went up as the cloud covered the mountain; and seven days later, the LORD called him to enter the cloud which was like a devouring fire upon the mountain. And Moses was there forty days and forty nights (15-18).

[ Illustration: The paintings above represent two key aspects of Exodus 24. The First Image symbolizes the fact that the Israelites were on the verge of a new world (a "mondo novo") because they had just accepted God's covenant, part of which was to bring them into a new land (Canaan) which would be their permanent home. The Second Image symbolizes the visions of God which the people, the elders, and Moses had in varying degrees -- symbolized here by "Christ in Glory" in accord with the statement in 1 Corinthians 10:4 -- " ... the spiritual Rock that followed them ... was Christ." ]

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

2. Promised (Covenanted) Instruction (Ex 19:1 - Nu 2:34) - 1446 - 1445 B.C. Sinai, which,
in Exodus = Instruction for the People in General (or "THE VISITS") (Ex 19:1 - Ex 40:38) - 1446 - 1445 B.C. Sinai

1 And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off. 2 And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.
3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do. 4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD. 6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient. 8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.
9 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: 10 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone , and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. 11 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.
12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone , and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them. 13 And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God. 14 And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.
15 And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount. 16 And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. 18 And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.
