Explanation: Leviticus 4 contains the regulations for sins of ignorance for four classes of people: for the "anointed priest" - probably the High Priest (1-12), for the congregation (13-21), for the ruler (22-26), and for a common person (27-35). The regulations are these:
     1. The animal offered: for the High Priest and the Congregation = a young bull; for the Ruler = a young male goat; for the Common Person = a young female goat or a young female sheep.
     2. The Transfer of Sin: by laying on of hands on the victim's head [i.e., pressing or leaning on the victim's head] for all four categories.
     3. The Presentation of the Blood: for the High Priest and for the Congregation it is sprinkled or thrown seven times before the LORD in front of the veil of the sanctuary (but not for the Ruler or the Common Person); for all four categories the priest dipped his finger in the blood and applied it to the horns of one of the altars; for the High Priest and the Congregation the blood was applied to the horns of the altar of incense; for the Ruler and the Common Person the blood was applied by the priest on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. And for all four categories, the blood was poured out at the base of the altar of burnt offering.
     4. Presentation of the Fat: All the fat for all four categories was burned on the altar of burnt offering.
     5. Presentation of the Rest of the Animal: For the High Priest, the skin and the other parts of the animal were taken outside the camp and burnt at the ash-heap; for the Congregation the whole animal (presumably including the skin) was also burned outside the camp; for the Ruler and the Congregation, the disposal of the parts is not specified here, but Leviticus 6:24-30 says that the rest of the animal could be eaten by the priest.

     [ Illustration: The paintings above depict two aspects of ignorance. In the First Image moral ignorance is featured. Vice and Virtue attempt to influence the young prince. Virtue is attempting to correct his moral ignorance on the one hand, Vice is attempting to prey upon it on the other. In the Second Image ignorance is presented as a mere lack of awareness. The attention of the woman is directed to what, from the title of the painting, must be a debacle (a sudden disaster) of some kind - perhaps her's or someone else's. Or the title may be an ironic exaggeration for something minor gone amiss. Of the nature and genesis of the debacle (major or minor) we are ignorant, as, presumably was she until the moment depicted by the artist. Taken together, I am using the symbols in the paintings, to imply that assistance often is necessary to understand and to recover from the sometimes disastrous effects of sins of ignorance. As described below, such assistance was provided by the LORD for those who were taken unaware by such sins. ]

     ³² And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish. ³³ And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering. ³⁴ And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar: ³⁵ And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD: and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.
