Ad Lib 2009: The Annual Retreat
For Literary, Visual, & Performing Arts

September 11 - September 13, 2009
Franciscan Retreat Center
Colorado Springs, CO

Here is a preview of what’s coming up at Ad Lib ’09:

Our program this year is particularly significant, with two remarkably gifted men representing two facets of the arts: words and images.

Our first guest artist, a representative of the St. John’s Bible Project, will be on site to educate and delight us with samples and explanations of the first illuminated Bible in 500 years! This is a remarkable endeavor, and we are honored to have with us Tim Ternes, their director of exhibition and programming. He will present on Friday, September 11, and also preside at a Visio Divina at Ad Lib the following morning, using the illustrations for meditative purposes.

THE SAINT JOHN'S BIBLE

Commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minn., The Saint John’s Bible is a contemporary work created in the tradition of handwritten medieval manuscripts. The artistic director of the project, Donald Jackson, is one of the world’s foremost Western calligraphers and scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office at the House of Lords. During the past ten years, Jackson has worked in rural Wales, with scribes and artists to write and illuminate The Saint John’s Bible entirely by hand, using quills and paints hand-ground from precious minerals and stones such as lapis lazuli, vermilion, malachite, silver, copper, and 24-karat gold.

At the onset of a new millennium, Saint John’s University and the monks of Saint John’s Abbey are seeking to ignite the spiritual imagination of people throughout the world by commissioning a work of art that illuminates the world today. This is the first time in 500 years that a Benedictine Monastery has commissioned a handwritten, illuminated Bible. Its construction parallels that of its medieval predecessors, written on vellum, using quills, natural handmade inks, hand-ground pigments and gold leaf while incorporating modern themes, images and technology of the 21st century.

The Saint John’s Bible, consisting of 1,150 pages in seven volumes, was completed in 2008. It will be housed permanently at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minn., where it will be used in worship and be available to scholars and the public. The Saint John’s Bible will tour to libraries and museums worldwide, offering educational and outreach initiatives for children and underserved communities.

He is Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and is the author of GOD IN THE GALLERY: A CHRISTIAN EMBRACE OF MODERN ART (Baker, 2008). His book also examines the relationship of the visual arts to Christian worship and experience.
