Rendering of the Tribute Money (1425-1427)
Masaccio (1401-1428)
Italian Renaissance Style, Quattrocento Period
Brancacci Chapel, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, Italy

Explanation: Masaccio's painting depicts the whole scene described in the Scriptures below. In the center Massachio depicts Jesus (rather than Peter, as in the Scripture) disputing with a group of men about paying tax of the silver didrachma. To the left Peter finds the fish Jesus told him he would find. In its mouth is a stater, a silver coin twice the weight of the didrachma and twice its worth. On the right side of the picture Peter pays the tax for himself and for Jesus.

Matthew 17:24-27, Mark 9:33a

Mark 9:33a        And he came to Capernaum:
Matthew 17:24    And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Does not your master pay tribute?
Matthew 17:25   He said, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented [i.e., anticipated] him, saying, What think you, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
Matthew 17:26   Peter said unto him, Of strangers. Jesus said unto him, Then are the children free.
Matthew 17:27   Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go you to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first comes up; and when you have opened his mouth, you shall find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and you.
