Explanation: When multitudes began to follow Jesus after seeing some of his miracles and hearing his confrontations with the Pharisees and other authorities, Jesus turned to the multitude and talked to them about the cost of discipleship. He told them that they must love him more than they love their families and even their own life. He said that they must be willing to die for him. He told them that they must count the cost of discipleship, just as a house bullder or a king going to war counts the cost of the enterprise before they decide whether to do it or not. He said they must renounce everything to follow him, otherwise they would be fit for nothing except to be cast out.

Luke 14:25-35

Luke 14:25-35      25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, 26 If any man comes to me, and hates not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whosoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sits not down first, and counts the cost, whether he has sufficient to finish it? 29 Lest haply, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sits not down first, and consults whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an ambassage, and desires conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he has, he cannot be my disciple. 34 Salt is good: but if the salt has lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
