Marriage of the Virgin (1431-1432)
Fra Angelico (c. 1395-1455)
Italian Renaissance Style
Museo di San Marco, Florence, Italy

Explanation: Concerning divorce, Jesus said that God's original intention for marriage was to have a man and his wife live together for all of their lives as one. However, divorce was allowable for adultery. Fra Angelico's painting (above) depicts a supremely blessed marriage - - that of Joseph and Mary, the step-father and mother, respectively, of Jesus.

Matthew 19:3-12; Mark 10:2-12

Matthew 19:3-12      3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Mark 10:3      3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? Mark 10:4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. Mark 10:5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, Mark 10:7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; Mark 10:8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. Matthew 19:6b What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. Matthew 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? Matthew 19:8 He said unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Mark 10:10      10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter. Matthew 19:9 [And he said,] And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery Mark 10:b against her: and whoso marries her which is put away commits adultery. Mark 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she commits adultery. Matthew 19:10 His disciples said unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. Matthew 19:11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. Matthew 19:12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
