The Chief Priests Ask Jesus by What Right Does He Act in This Way

Explanation: On Tuesday, the third day of the Passion Week, after Jesus and his disciples passed by the withered fig tree, he entered the Temple as he had begun to do daily. Upon entering, the Jewish authorities questioned his right to teach and to do the things he was doing. Jesus countered by asking them where John derived his authority. They would not say it was from men because they feared the people who believed John was a prophet. Nor would they say it was from God, because they then would have to admit that Jesus derived his authority from God. On that basis Jesus refused to tell them from where his authority came.

Matthew 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8

Mark 11:27 And they came again to Jerusalem [Luke 20:1 on one of those days]: [Matthew 21:23 And when he was come into the temple,] as he was walking in the temple, [Luke 20:1 as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel,] there came to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, Mark 11:28 And said unto him, By what authority do you these things? and who gave you this authority to do these things? Matthew 21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. Matthew 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did you not then believe him? Matthew 21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; [Luke 20:6 (for) all the people will stone us:] for all hold John as a prophet [Luke 20:6 (being) persuaded]. Mark 11:33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering said unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
