Explanation: Jesus told a parable about a man who planted a vineyard and rented it to managers who were supposed to care for the vineyard, take their wages, and give the owner his share of the profits. He sent various servants to do the collection; but the managers killed some and beat others. When the owner sent his son they killed him thinking they could take over the vineyard. But judgment, not reward, would be the result of their actions. And God (represented by the owner) would cause his son (Jesus) to become the heir. In this parable, Jesus was also called the stone which the builders rejected who nevertheless became the cornerstone. Tisso's painting, above, represents this aspect of the parable.

Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:112; Luke 20:9-19

Mark 12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables, Luke 20:9 (speaking) to the people this parable; [Matthew 21:33 (and he said) Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:] [Luke 20:9b for a long time.] Mark 12:2 And at the season [Matthew 21:34a when the time of the fruit drew near,] he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard: [Luke 20:10b but the husbandmen [Mark 12:3 caught him,] beat him, and sent him away empty.] Luke 20:11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. Luke 20:12 And again he sent a third: [Mark 12:4 and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, {Luke 20;12b and cast him out,} and sent him away shamefully handled.] Mark 12:5 And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others [Matthew 21:36 more than the first: and they did unto them likewise,] beating some, and killing some. Luke 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, [Mark 12:6 Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved,] What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. [Mark 12:6 (So) he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.] Matthew 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they [Luke 20:14 reasoned] (and) said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance [Mark 12:7 and the inheritance shall be ours.] Matthew 21:39 And they caught him, [Mark 12:8 And they took him,] and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. Matthew 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard comes, what will he do unto those husbandmen? Mark 12:9b he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. Luke 20:16b And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. Matthew 21:41b He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Luke 20:17 And [Matthew 21:42 Jesus] beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written,] [Mark 12:10 And have you not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected [Matthew 21:42 the same] is become the head of the corner: Mark 12:11 This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Matthew 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Matthew 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Matthew 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spoke [Luke 20:19b against] them. Luke 20:19a And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him [Mark 12:12 for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them:]; (but) they feared the people [Matthew 21:46 because they took him for a prophet.]: Mark 12:12 and they left him, and went their way.
