Pharisees, Scribes, and Sadducees Question Jesus

Explanation: On Tuesday of the Passion Week, the Sadducees questioned Jesus about the resurrection, which they do not believe in. This was another in a series of attempts to discredit him. They told him a story about a woman who was married to seven brothers each of whom died and left her to the next in accord with the law of Levirate Marriage. None of the brothers had children by her, so no heirs were produced. They then asked him whose wife she would be in the resurrection. The implication was that each of the brothers had an equal claim on her. But Jesus informed them that they misunderstood the nature of the next life, for there they neither marry nor are given in marriage.

Matthew 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-40

Luke 20:27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Luke 20:28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Matthew 22:25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue [Mark 12:20b seed] [Luke 20:29b children], left his wife unto his brother: Mark 12:21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise Luke 20:31b and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. Matthew 22:27 And last of all the woman died also. Mark 12:23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. Mark 12:24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Luke 20:34b The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: Luke 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Luke 20:36 Neither can they die any more: [Matthew 22:30b but are as the angels of God in heaven,] for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. Mark 12:26a And as touching the dead, that they rise: [Luke 20:37b even Moses showed at the bush,] have you not read [Matthew 22:31b that which was spoken unto you by God] in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, saying, Mark 12:26b I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Mark 12:27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: [Luke 20:38 for all live unto him;] you therefore do greatly err. Matthew 22:33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. Luke 20:39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, you have well said. Luke 20:40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
