The Ancestors of Christ: David, Solomon (1511)

Explanation: On Tuesday of the Passion Week, after Jesus put his questioners to silence, he posed a question of his own. He asked them how Christ could be both the son of David and David's Lord. The image above shows Christ's two most famous ancestors, David and Solomon. Even though Solomon surpassed David in glory and wisdom, he was never called David's lord, as the Jewish authorities would have realized. Such a designation was unprecedented in Israel's history.

Matthew 22:41-46; Mark 12:35-37; Luke 20:41-44

Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Matthew 22:42 Saying, What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They said unto him, The Son of David. Mark 12:35 And Jesus answered and said [Luke 20:41b unto them,], while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? Matthew 22:43 He said unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, Mark 12:36a For David himself said by the Holy Ghost [Luke 20:42b in the book of Psalms,] Matthew 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool. Luke 20:44 David therefore calls him Lord, how is he then his son? Mark 12:37b And the common people heard him gladly. Matthew 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
