Explanation: On Friday of the Passion Week, after several trials by the Jewish authorities Jesus had his first trial before Pilate. In this trial Jesus confessed that he was the King of the Jews. This confession later served as the basis of the inscription which Pilate put above the cross of Jesus. Also, during this trial Pilate asked his now famous question, "What is truth?"

Matthew 27:2, 11-14; Mark 15:1b-5; Luke 23:1-5; John 18:28-38

Matthew 27:2a And when they had bound him, Luke 23:1 the whole multitude of them arose Mark 15:1b and carried him away. John 18:28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment [Matthew 27:2c and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor]: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
John 18:29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring you against this man? John 18:30 They answered, [Luke 23:2a and they began to accuse him,] and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto you. Luke 23:2b We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. John 18:31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take you him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: John 18:32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
John 18:33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, Matthew 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? Mark 15:2b And he answering said unto him, You said it. John 18:34 Say you this thing of yourself, or did others tell it you of me? John 18:35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me: what have you done? John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Are you a king then? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice. John 18:38 Pilate said unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
Matthew 27:12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Mark 15:4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answer you nothing? behold how many things they witness against you. Matthew 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that [Mark 15:5 Pilate] the governor marvelled greatly. Luke 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. Luke 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
