Explanation: On Friday of the Passion Week, after Herod tried Jesus, Herod sent him back to Pilate to be tried a second time. During Pilate's second trial of Jesus, Pilate repeatedly confessed, as he had before, that Jesus was innocent. Nevertheless, the Jewish authorities constantly demanded his execution. They also stirred the people to do the same. To pacify them, Pilate scourged Jesus and presented him with the words "behold the man" ("ecce homo," as in the caption above). He hoped the scourging would satisfy their blood lust and that they would relent and agree to release Jesus. But they still demanded his death. So Pilate delivered him to them to be crucified.
