Explanation: On Friday of the Passion week, after he was arrested and tried, Jesus was crucified. He hung on the cross for six hours before he died. His death was no ordinary death. Through his perfect life and sacrificial death for those who believe, he made atonement for those who believe in him and obey him - - who rest, not in their own works, but in his finished and all-sufficient work. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16). Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12). And, as he said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).

Matthew 27:31-56; Mark 15:20-41; Luke 23:26-49; John 19:17-30

Matthew 27:31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the [Mark 15:20b purple] robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. John 19:17a And he bearing his cross went forth
Luke 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, [Mark 15:21c the father of Alexander and Rufus], [Mark 15:21b who passed by,] coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross [Matthew 27:32b (and) compelled (him)], that he might bear it after Jesus. Luke 23:27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. Luke 23:28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. Luke 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Luke 23:30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. Luke 23:31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
Luke 23:32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. Mark 15:22 And they bring him unto the place [John 19:17c which is called in the Hebrew] Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. Matthew 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall [Mark 15:23b (which is) wine mingled with myrrh]: [Mark 15:23c but he received it not], and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors [Matthew 27:38; Mark 15:27 thieves], one on the right hand, and the other on the left, John 19:18b and Jesus in the midst. Mark 15:28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which said, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
     Luke 23:34a Then said Jesus,

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

     John 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments [Matthew 27:35b casting lots] [Mark 15:24b upon them, what every man should take], and made four parts, to every soldier a pare and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. John 19:24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture [Matthew 27:35b which was spoken by the prophet] might be fulfilled, which said, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. Matthew 27:36 And sitting down they watched him there;
John 19:19a And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross, Matthew 27:37 and set up over his head his accusation. Luke 23:38 And (the) superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew. John 19:19b And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 19:20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. John 19:21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. John 19:22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
Luke 23:35a And the people stood beholding. Mark 15:29 And they that passed by railed on him [Matthew 27:39b reviled him], wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, you that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, Mark 15:30 Save yourself, and come down from the cross, Matthew 27:40b If you be the Son of God.
Mark 15:31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking [Luke 23:35c derided him, saying] among themselves with the scribes [Matthew 27:41b and elders], He saved others; himself he cannot save. Luke 23:35d let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. Matthew 27:42b If he be the King of Israel, [Mark 15:32a Let Christ the King of Israel] now come down [Mark 15:32b descend now] from the cross, [Mark 15:32c that we may see and believe,] and we will believe him. Matthew 27:43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
Luke 23:36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, Luke 23:37 And saying, If you be the king of the Jews, save yourself.
Matthew 27:44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, [Mark 15:32c reviled him] (and) cast the same in his teeth. Luke 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If you be Christ, save yourself and us. Luke 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Do not you fear God, seeing you are in the same condemnation? Luke 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man has done nothing amiss. Luke 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him,

Verily I say unto you, To day shall you be with me in paradise.

John 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother,

Woman, behold your son!

John 19:27 Then said he to the disciple,
Behold your mother!

And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Luke 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, [Mark 15:33 and when the sixth hour was come,] [Matthew 27:45 from the sixth hour] there was a darkness [Mark 15:33b over the whole land] over all the earth until the ninth hour. Luke 23:45a And the sun was darkened,
Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,

Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?

that is to say, [Mark 15:34b being interpreted,] My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Mark 15:35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calls Elias.
John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said,

I thirst.

John 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: [Matthew 27:48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar], and put it upon hyssop [Mark 15:36b on a reed], and put it to his mouth, Matthew 27:48b and gave him to drink. Matthew 27:49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him, Mark 15:36d to take him down.
John 19:30a When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, John 19:30b he said,

It is finished:

Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, Luke 23:46b said,

Father, into your hands I commend my spirit:

and having said thus, John 19:30c and he bowed his head, and Matthew 27:50b yielded up the ghost.
Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain [Luke 23:45c in the midst.] from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, Matthew 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Matthew 27:54 Now when the centurion [Mark 15:39b which stood over against him], and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, Mark 15:39c that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, they feared greatly, [Luke 23:47b (and) glorified God] saying, [Luke 23:47c Certainly this was a righteous man.] Truly [Mark 15:39d this man] was the Son of God. Luke 23:48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. Matthew 27:55a And many women were there Mark 15:40 looking on afar off [Matthew 27:55b which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:]: [Mark 15:41a (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem,] among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome, Matthew 27:56b the mother of Zebedee's children.
