Explanation: As Friday of the Passion Week came to a close, Jesus' body was taken down from the cross and buried. Before he was removed from the cross, they came to hasten his death by breaking his legs. When they saw that he was already dead, a soldier pierced his side with a spear. Blood and water came out, revealing that Jesus was indeed dead. This fulfilled two prophecies: 1). that none of his bones would be broken, and 2). that they would look on him whom they had pierced. Pilate delivered the body of Jesus to Joseph of Arimathaea who buried him in his own tomb, since Jesus had no tomb. Nicodemus came with spices for his burial. The tomb was sealed, and the disciples waited till after the Passover to do any further burial ministrations.

Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56a; John 19:31-42

John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. John 19:32 Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. John 19:33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs: John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. John 19:35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knows that he said true, that you might believe. John 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. John 19:37 And again another scripture said, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Luke 23:50 And behold, John 19:38a after this Joseph of Arimathaea, [Luke 23:51b a city of the Jews] - - [Matthew 27:57b a rich man], [Mark 15:43a an honourable counsellor,] [Luke 23:50b a good man, and a just], [Luke 23:51c who also himself waited for the kingdom of God,] - - being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, [Luke 23:51a (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them)]. Mark 15:43c (He) went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. John 19:38b (He) besought Pilate [Luke 23:52b and begged] that he might take away the body of Jesus: John 19:38c and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Mark 15:44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. Mark 15:45a And when he knew it of the centurion, John 19:38c Pilate gave him leave. Matthew 27:58b Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. Mark 15:45b (And) he gave the body to Joseph. John 19:38d He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
John 19:39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Mark 15:46a And (Joseph) bought fine linen. John 19:40 Then took they the body of Jesus [Luke 23:53a down, and wrapped it], and wound it in linen clothes [Matthew 27:59b in a clean linen cloth] with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
John 19:41a Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; John 19:41 and in the garden [Matthew 27:60a his own new tomb,] a sepulchre, [Luke 23:53b that was hewn in stone,] wherein was never man yet laid. Mark 15:46c And (Joseph) rolled [Matthew 27:60b a great] stone unto the door of the sepulcher Matthew 27:60c and departed. Luke 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. John 19:42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
Luke 23:55a And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, Luke 23:55b and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. Matthew 27:61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary [Mark 15:47b the mother of Joses], sitting over against the sepulchre. Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
