Mary Magdalene Tells the Disciples of the Empty Tomb (1886-1894)
James Tissot (1836-1902)

Explanation: Early on Sunday of the Passion Week, Mary Magdalene ran from the empty tomb and told Peter and John that the Lord's body was missing and that "we know not where they have laid him." Perhaps the other disciples were present, as depicted in Tissot's painting above, perhaps not. Also, it would seem, Mary Magdalene did not see the angel who appeared to the other women who came with her to the tomb; or perhaps she saw him but did not linger long enough to receive his report. Certainly she acted quickly to contact the disciples, for she ran to them. In contrast, the other women reported that Jesus was risen, as the angel said to them. This contrast strengthens the idea that Mary Magdalene did not receive this message from the angel.

Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2-4; Luke 24:1-3; John 20:1-2

Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath [John 20:1a the first day of the week], [Mark 16:2 very early in the morning], [John 20:1c when it was yet dark,] [Mark 16:2b at the rising of the sun,] as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre; Luke 24:1b (and) they came unto the sepulchre, Luke 24:1c bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. Mark 16:3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? Mark 16:4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away, [John 20:1d taken] [Luke 24:2b from the sepulchre]: for it was very great. Luke 24:3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. John 20:2 Then she [Mary Magdalene] ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
