Explanation: The confession below recognizes two sacraments, baptism and the Lord's Supper. These are "signs and seals of the Covenant of Grace." And, lest we see only the visible signs and seals, the confession also reminds us that these represent Christ and his benefits; thus, they should turn our attention to him in his glory with his hand raised in blessing (as in the illumination above).

Chapter 27: Of the Sacraments

Westminster Confession of Faith. Chapter 27: Of the Sacraments.

Section 1. Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace, 1 immediately instituted by God, 2 to represent Christ and His benefits; and to confirm our interest in Him: 3 as also, to put a visible difference between those that belong unto the Church and the rest of the world; 4 and solemnly to engage them to the service of God in Christ, according to His Word. 5
Section 2. There is, in every sacrament, a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified: whence it comes to pass, that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other. 6
Section 3. The grace which is exhibited in or by the sacraments rightly used, is not conferred by any power in them; neither does the efficacy of a sacrament depend upon the piety or intention of him that does administer it: 7 but upon the work of the Spirit, 8 and the word of institution, which contains, together with a precept authorizing the use thereof, a promise of benefit to worthy receivers. 9
Section 4. There are only two sacraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the Gospel; that is to say, Baptism, and the Supper of the Lord: neither of which may be dispensed by any, but by a minister of the Word lawfully ordained. 10
Section 5. The sacraments of the Old Testament in regard to the spiritual things thereby signified and exhibited, were, for substance, the same with those of the new. 11

Genesis 17:7, 10. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 10.      1 Corinthians 11:25-26. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
Galatians 3:27. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Galatians 3:17. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

1 Corinthians 10:16, 21. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? Note 7

Romans 2:28-29. 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
