Explanation: In Psalm 87 the Psalmist speaks of God's favor upon Zion and of the honor of being born there. Today's painting of an oasis reflects the closing statement of the Psalm below, which metaphorically represents Zion as an oasis of joy.

The Psalmist tells us how greatly the LORD loves Zion, preferring it above all other locations in the land of Israel. Zion, God's city, has a glorious reputation (1-3). Many are proud of being born in cities and regions such as Rahab, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia. Likewise, many are proud to be born in Zion because God himself will establish her. And, when the LORD counts his people, he will note that the Psalmist was born there (4-6). The singers and the musicians will be there. And, in Zion, all of the springs (fountains) of the Psalmist are there. This image means that, to the Psalmist, every place but Zion is a desert; but Zion is an oasis filled with springs of water (7).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK THREE OF FIVE:

Psalms 73-89.

Psalm 87

1 A Psalm or Song for the sons of Korah.

His foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.

4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me:
behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.
5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her:
and the highest himself shall establish her.
6 The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people,
that this man was born there. Selah.

7 As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there:
all my springs are in thee
.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
