Explanation: In Psalm 96 the Psalmist, perhaps David, calls upon all to worship the LORD. The author and the occasion are not specified; but this Palm plus Psalms 97, 98, and 100 have significant parallels with David's Psalm which is recorded in 1 Chronicles 16. This fact may give us the author (David) and the occasion (the dedication of the Tabernacle) for all four of these Psalms. Today's Psalm begins with an exhortation to praise the LORD with a new song which extols the LORD for his excellence. I have therefore chosen the image of Gustav Mahler for today's illustration. Mahler was noted for excellence in composition and for demanding excellence in performance. In addition, certain compositions by Mahler are on themes related to Scripture, notably his Resurrection Symphony.

The Psalmist invites all the earth to sing to the LORD a new song which blesses his name and declares his salvation. The song should declare his glory and his wonders among the heathen (1-3). The LORD is great; he is praiseworthy; and he is to be feared above all gods. The gods of the nations are merely idols (literally, in the Hebrew, "nothing"); but the LORD made the heavens. The LORD is honorable and majestic (grand and splendid); strength and beauty are in his sanctuary -- i.e., the strength and beauty of the LORD are revealed in his sanctuary (4-6). Therefore, everyone should attribute glory and strength to the LORD; and they should come before him with an offering (7-8). We should worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness and reverence him. We should inform the heathen that the LORD reigns. He has made the world to stand immovable; and he shall judge the people righteously. The fields and all that is within them, and the trees of the forest, will rejoice before the LORD who comes to judge the world with righteousness and truth (9-13).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FOUR OF FIVE:

Psalms 90-106.

Psalm 96

1 O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.
2 Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.

3 Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4 For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
6 Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
8 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.

9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth:
the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13 Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth:
he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
