     Explanation: Psalm 99 emphasizes the holiness of God and of everything associated with him. The Psalm calls us to worship this God; and the painting above depicts such a gathering to worship and to hear.

     We must tremble (quiver) before the LORD who reigns and sits between the cherubim; and before him the earth must be moved (quake). The LORD is great in Zion and high above all people. Therefore, we should praise the LORD's great, and fearsome, and holy name (1-3). God -- (referred to as "the king's strength," because God strengthens the king) -- loves judgment, establishes equity, and executes judgment and righteousness in the land. He should, therefore, be exalted and worshiped for his holiness (4-5). Moses, Aaron, and Samuel called on God's name; and he answered them. He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar (chiefly at Sinai). They kept his commandments. And God answered them because he forgave them, even though he took vengeance on their inventions. The conclusion is that we should exalt the LORD God and worship him at his holy hill (the Tabernacle/Temple mount), because he is holy (6-9).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FOUR OF FIVE:

Psalms 90-106.

Psalm 99

1 The LORD reigneth;
let the people tremble:
he sitteth between the cherubims;
let the earth be moved.
2 The LORD is great in Zion;
and he is high above all the people.
3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name;
for it is holy.

4 The king's strength also loveth judgment;
thou dost establish equity,
thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.
5 Exalt ye the LORD our God,
and worship at his footstool;
for he is holy.

6 Moses and Aaron among his priests,
and Samuel among them that call upon his name;
they called upon the LORD,
and he answered them.
7 He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar:
they kept his testimonies,
and the ordinance that he gave them.
8 Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God:
thou wast a God that forgavest them,
though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.
9 Exalt the LORD our God,
and worship at his holy hill;
for the LORD our God is holy.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
