Explanation: In Psalm 112 the Psalmist sings of the blessedness of the upright man. The painting above depicts two of the chief blessings -- light arising, and abundance.

The Psalmist begins with the words "Praise the LORD." He then lists the many ways in which the righteous man is blessed. The man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments, is blessed (1). His descendants will be mighty upon the earth; and they too will be blessed (2). He will have wealth and riches; and his righteousness will endure forever (3). For the upright man, light arises in darkness because of his graciousness, compassion, and righteousness (4). He shows favor to others and lends to the needy; he guides his affairs with discretion (5). He will not be moved forever; God will remember him (6). He will not be afraid of evil tidings because his heat is fixed, trusting in the LORD (7). He will not be afraid; he will see his desire upon his enemies (8). He helps the poor; his righteousness endures forever; and his horn (power) will be exalted with honor (9). The wicked will see the blessings of the righteous and will be so grieved that he will gnash his teeth and melt away; and his desire will perish (10).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FIVE OF FIVE:

Psalms 107-150.

Psalm 112

1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
