Explanation: In Psalm 126 the Psalmist and Israel rejoice over the end of the Babylonian Captivity. Today's painting illustrates the streams in the south (Negev) mentioned in verse 4. The fantasy of abundant waters presented in the painting is similar to the abundance of the waters in reality.

The Psalmist remembers the rejoicing which Israel had when they were released from the Babylonian Captivity. They were like those who dream (1). They laughed and sang; and the heathen admitted that the LORD had done great things for them (2). Therefore they were glad (3). And the Psalmist asked that the LORD would turn their captivity again like streams in the south -- i.e., the wilderness known as the Negev (4). The lesson was that those who sow in tears will reap in joy; they will go out with precious seen and will come again bringing the sheaves from a harvest of joy (5-6).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FIVE OF FIVE:

Psalms 107-150.

Psalm 126

1 A Song of degrees. *

When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion,
we were like them that dream.
2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
and our tongue with singing:
then said they among the heathen,
The LORD hath done great things for them.
3 The LORD hath done great things for us;
whereof we are glad.
4 Turn again our captivity, O LORD,
as the streams in the south.

5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
6 He that goeth forth and weepeth,
bearing precious seed,
shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
bringing his sheaves with him.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
