Explanation: In Psalm 128 the Psalmist describes the blessedness, particularly in family life, of the one who serves the LORD with reverence. Multi-generational blessings, a key effect of serving the LORD, is illustrated by today's painting.

The Psalmist tells us that all who fear (reverence) the LORD and who walk in his ways are blessed (1). His labor will be blessed; he will be happy; and things will go well (2). His wife and children will be nourishing (emotionally) to him when he fears the LORD (3-4). The LORD will bless him out of Zion (i.e., the place where he dwelt, first in the Tabernacle, then in the Temple); and he will see the good (welfare) of Jerusalem all of his life (5). He will see his grandchildren; and he will see peace upon his nation, Israel (6).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FIVE OF FIVE:

Psalms 107-150.

Psalm 128

1 A Song of degrees. *

Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD;
that walketh in his ways.
2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands:
happy shalt thou be,
and it shall be well with thee.

3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house:
thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed
that feareth the LORD.

5 The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion:
and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children,
and peace upon Israel.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
