Explanation: Proverbs 16 contains comparisons and contrasts between the righteous and the wicked. Today's image illustrates those verses (9, 17, 25, 29) which speak of the need to consider one's path.

The subjects of chapter 16 are these: The disposition of the heart in man and the reply of the tongue is controlled by the LORD (1). Men believe that their ways are clean; but the LORD weighs their spirits (2). Commit your works to the LORD and your thoughts will be established (3). The LORD made all things for himself, even the wicked for the day of evil (4). The LORD abominates the proud-hearted; though they join forces they will not be unpunished (5). Mercy and truth purge iniquity; and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil (6). When a man's ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him (7). A little with righteousness is better than great but unjust gain (8). A man devises his way; but the LORD directs his steps (9). A king can speak like an oracle; and his mouth does not sin in judgment (10). Just weights and measures belong to the LORD; they are his work (11). It is an abomination for a king to commit wickedness because his throne is established by righteousness (12). Kings delight in righteous lips; and they love him who speaks that which is right (13). The wrath of a king is like messengers of death; but a wise man will pacify it (14). In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favor is like the latter rain (15). Wisdom is better than gold, and understanding than choice silver (16). The highway of the upright turns aside from evil; whoever guards his way preserves his life (17). Pride goes before destruction; and a haughty spirit before a fall (18). It is better to be of a lowly spirit than to divide plunder with the proud (19). He who handles a matter wisely shall find good; and he who trusts the LORD is happy (20). The wise in heart are prudent; and the sweetness of the lips increases persuasiveness (21). Understanding is a wellspring of life to those who have it; but the instruction of fools is folly (22). The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and persuasive (23). Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and health to the body (24). There is a way which seems right to a man, but it ends in death (25). A worker's appetite works for him and urges him on (26). A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire (27). A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends (28). A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him a way that is not good (29). Some use facial gestures such as winking and pursing the lips as signals for dishonest plans; and thereby they bring evil to pass (30). Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by a righteous life (31). The one who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city (32). The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD (33).

PROVERBS
COLLECTION 1 OF 2
PROVERBS OF SOLOMON & THE WISE (SOLOMON'S COLLECTION)
Proverbs 1-24.

Proverbs 16
The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.
All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right.
A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment.
A just weight and balance are the LORD'S: all the weights of the bag are his work.
It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.
Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.
The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.
In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.
How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.
The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.
Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.
The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.
Pleasant words are as an [comb of] honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.
A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.
A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good.
He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things: moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.
The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.
