Explanation: In 3 John, John addresses his epistle to Gaius, who may have been an associate of the apostles in time past, or he may be some other. He was beloved in the church, and John shared their affection for him. John wishes him good health and spiritual prosperity. He rejoices that Gaius was walking in the truth (1-4).
John also commends Gaius for his faithful love to the brothers and to strangers. He asks him to receive and help those who come to be helpers of the truth (5-8).
John warns that when he comes he will remember the malicious words which Diotrephes spoke against him and his fellow-laborers, and how he stopped the church from receiving the brethren, and how he cast out those who would have received them. He did all of this because he loved to have preeminence (9-10).
So John gives his exhortation to follow that which is good, not evil. He who does good is of God; but he that does evil has not seen God. Demetrius was among those who practiced good. He had a good report from everyone, including John and his fellow laborers, and he exemplified the truth (11-12).
John wanted to write many things to them, but he preferred to speak to them in person. He promised to see them shortly. He wished them peace. He sent greetings from their mutual friends. And he asked that greetings be given to the companions of Gaius (13-14).

[Illustration: Today's paintings symbolize the pride of Diotrephes (Image 1) and the honor of Demetrius (Image 2), men of whom John takes special note in today's chapter. Gaius, who also has special mention in today's chapter, is, like Demetrius a man of honor. Image 2 is, therefore, also a symbol for his character. ]

Book Outline:

3 JOHN (COVENANT LIVING: Defend the Faith)

1. Work Together for the Truth (3 John - Verses 1- 8) - 90 A.D. Israel
2. The Bad Truth About Diotrephes & the Good Truth About Demetrius (3 John - Verses 9-14) - 90 A.D. Israel

3 John

1. Work Together for the Truth (3 John - Verses 1- 8) - 90 A.D. Israel

1 The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. 2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. 3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; 6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: 7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

2. The Bad Truth About Diotrephes & the Good Truth About Demetrius (3 John - Verses 9-14) - 90 A.D. Israel

9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: 14 But I trust Ishall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face [mouth to mouth]. peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
