SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no days will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: Genesis 16 introduces Hagar. It records the first of two exits of Hagar from the household of Abram (see Genesis 21). In this first incident, Sarai, Abram's wife, was barren, so she gave Hagar, her Egyptian handmaid, to Abram as a surrogate to have children on her behalf (1-2). But, when Hagar conceived a child, she despised Sarai, and Sarai dealt severely with her, causing her to flee. So Sarai and Abraham rejected Hagar's son as an heir, and they rejected Hagar as a mother or Abraham's heir, reversing their original hope and intention (3-6).
The angel of the LORD found her by a fountain (or well) in the wilderness and told her to return to Sarai and submit to her (7-9).
As an encouragement to Hagar, the angel of the LORD told her that she would have a multitude of descendants. He told her to name her son Ishmael, saying that he would be a wild man who would be against everyone but would dwell in the midst of his brothers. By this act, and by these promises, God overruled the rejection of Hagar by Sarai and Abram; and he established Ishmael as an heir of Abram. Ishmael would not be the chief heir, but he would be greatly blessed (10-12).
In response, she called God "El-roiy" ("God-sees-me"); and the name of the well became "Beerlahairoi," or "well of the living (one) my seer" (13-14).
So Hagar bore Abram a son, Ishmael, when Abraham was 86 years old (15-16).

Genesis 16

7. Generations of Terah (Ge 11:27 - Ge 25:11) - 2296 - 1991 B.C. Canaan

("Now these are the generations of Terah" - Ge 11:27) - (An expansion of section 6)

Note: This generation centers on Terah rather than Abraham because all of Terah's descendants are important to Israel. The dates are from Terah's birth to Abraham's death.

1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptians, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptians, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. 4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. 6 But Abram said unto Sarai, behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee [the good in your eyes]. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. 9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. 10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy [multiplying I will multiply] seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. 12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 13 And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? 14 Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
