SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no days will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: The Pillar of Cloud and Fire, which marks the presence of the LORD, makes its first appearance in Exodus 13. The chapter opens while the Israelites are resting in Succoth on their first stop during the Exodus; and it begins with the LORD's instructions to Moses to consecrate all the firstborn among man and beast to the LORD (1-2).
Moses then told the people to remember this day in which they escaped from Egypt by the powerful hand of the LORD and to eat no leavened bread (to remind them that they had to leave so quickly that they had no time to use leaven to make their bread rise in the usual manner). He told them about the land to which they were going and the people who inhabited it. He said that Israel should eat unleavened bread for seven days and hold a feast on the seventh day. It was to be a memorial of the LORD's deliverance (3-10).
When they arrived in Canaan they were to redeem all the firstborn male animals, but the firstborn of the donkeys should be killed by breaking its neck if it was not redeemed. Also, all firstborn males among their sons should be redeemed. In time to come, when their sons asked why this was being done, they were to tell them that it was as a reminder that the LORD killed all the firstborn males among men and beasts when Pharaoh refused to let Israel go (11-16).
Moses then mentioned the significance of the route that Israel took out of the land. It avoided the nearby land of the Philistines because war was in progress. The people left Egypt equipped for battle and took the bones of Joseph with them. They moved from Succoth to Etham, traveling day and night, led by an abiding pillar of cloud in the day and a pillar of fire in the night (17-22).

[ Illustration: Today's paintings illustrate three main ideas in today's chapter. In Image 1 the Israelites exhume the bones of Joseph after crossing the Red Sea. However, judging from Exodus 13:18-22, this artistic interpretation is inaccurate. Moses had Joseph's bones with him as he and his people approached the Red Sea. Nevertheless, this illustrates an important part of Scripture since Joseph's bones gave Israel a visible token of the fulfillment of Joseph's prophecy that Israel would be released from the land. Image 2 depicts Moses as the leader of Israel. Image 3 depicts the LORD as the leader of Israel. ]

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.
3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD bought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. 4 This day came ye out in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters. 8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. 9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD'S law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD bought thee out of Egypt. 10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.
11 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee, 12 That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD'S. 13 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem. 14 And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD bought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage: 15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem. 16 And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD bought us forth out of Egypt.
17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: 18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn [charging he charged] the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit [visiting visit] you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you. 20 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
