SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: Numbers 26 the LORD ordered that another census of Israel be taken. This came after the Midianite women seduced the men of Israel (see chapter 25), resulting in the death of twenty-four thousand Israelites. This numbering was a prelude to the LORD sending the Israelites into the promised land. The LORD gave the command to number the males from twenty years old and upward (1-4).
The tribe of Reuben was numbered first. They had 430,730. The Reubenites, Dathan and Abiram, had perished along with the Levite, Korah when they tried to overthrow Moses and Aaron (5-11).
The tribe of Simeon numbered 22,200 (12-14).
The tribe of Gad numbered 40,500 (15-18).
The tribe of Judah numbered 76,500. Judah's sons Er and Onan had died several generations prior to the Exodus and left no progeny (19-22).
The tribe of Issachar numbered 64,300 (23-25).
The tribe of Zebulun numbered 60,500 (26-27).
The tribe of Manasseh numbered 52,700. In this tribe the daughters of Zelophehad were given his inheritance, because he had no sons (28-34).
The tribe of Ephraim numbered 32,500 (35-37).
The tribe of Benjamin numbered 45,600 (38-41).
The tribe of Dan numbered 64,400 (42-43).
The tribe of Asher numbered 53,400 (44-47).
The tribe of Naphtali numbered 45,400 (48-50).
In all, they numbered 601,730 (51).
This was 1,820 less than in the previous numbering at the beginning of the wilderness wanderings. Five tribes decreased in number -- Reuben, Simeon, Gad, Ephraim, and Naphtali. The rest increased. The LORD then told Moses that their allotments in the Promised Land would be according to their numbers and would be decided by casting lots (52-56).
The Levites numbered 23,000. The Levites, Nadab and Abihu had died on a previous occasion for offering strange fire before the LORD (57-62).
This numbering was done in the plains of Moab near Jericho. All of the previous generation from twenty years old and upward had fallen in the wilderness. None of them were left except for Caleb and Joshua (63-65).
[ Sermons: Robert S Rayburn. Edward Donnelly. Various. ]
[ Illustration: Though mentioned in passing (Numbers 26:63-65), the death of a whole generation (consisting of hundreds of thousands of people, or more) is a key factor in this chapter. Hence I have chosen the painting of a place of mass burial to represent the magnitude of the final outcome for those who rebelled in the wilderness. As to the artist, I have, here, provided a link to Pierre Etienne Remillieux (1811-1856). After considerable research, he is the closest match to the time and style I could find to today's painting. This is not a statement on my part that I think he is the painter designated by the initials "E. R." Rather, it is a link be considered for further thought and research for those who are interested. ]

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
