SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: 2 Samuel 6 records the process of moving the Ark of the Covenant from Baale of Judah (otherwise known as Kirjathjearim) to Jerusalem. Additional details of the event and of related events are given in 1 Chronicles chapters 13, 14, 15, and 16
David gathered thirty thousand chosen men to move the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. They put it on a new cart and took it from the house of the Levite, Abinadab (1 Samuel 7:1); and his sons, Uzzah and Ahio, drove the cart. Ahio went before the cart (1-4).
As the Ark went on its journey, the Israelites accompanied it with all kinds of musical instruments. But, when they came to the threshingfloor of Nachon, the oxen shook the ark; and when Uzzah took hold of it to steady it, (in violation of Numbers 4:15), the LORD struck him dead. This upset and frightened David who called the name of the place Perezuzzah ("a breach upon Uzzah"). And he left the Ark at the house of Obededom for three months; and the LORD blessed Obededom (5-11).
When David found out that the Ark had brought blessing to the house of Obededom, he went to take it to Jerusalem with gladness. When his retinue moved it six paces they stopped and made sacrifices; and David danced before the LORD with all his might, clothed with a linen ephod. And they brought the Ark into Jerusalem with shouting and trumpets sounding (12-15).
When David's wife, Michal, saw this she despised David in her heart. After they put the Ark in its place in a tent erected for it by David, David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD. He then blessed the people and gave them a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins (KJV - "flagon of wine"). Everyone then departed to their homes (16-19).
David then came to bless his household; and Michal spoke reproachfully to him about his behavior, which she considered shameful. David rebuked her for her words; and she had no child until the day of her death. This may be because the LORD shut up her womb; or it may be that David put her into a state of living widowhood as he did with his concubines whom Absalom defiled -- 2 Samuel 16:22 with 2 Samuel 20:3. This would have prevented Michal, and therefore her father Saul, from having a legitimate heir to the throne and would have ended all hope for any claim to the kingdom by the house of Saul. If this latter interpretation is correct, it may be that Michal's words were more than a snit of anger; they may have been a repudiation of David; and David may have understood them as such. Her affection toward David may have changed during the time she was with the new husband which Saul gave to her (1 Samuel 25:44); and she may have come increasingly under the sway of her father's antipathy to David (20-23).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

1 Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that [sits upon] between the cherubims. 3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and bought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. 4 And they bought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.
5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. 6 And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. 7 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God. 8 And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach [breached a breach] upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day. 9 And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me? 10 So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. 11 And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obededom the Gittite three months: and the LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household.
12 And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and bought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness. 13 And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. 14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel bought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.
16 And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. 17 And they bought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 18 And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. 19 And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.
20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself [exposing esposed himself]! 21 And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD. 22 And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour. 23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.
