SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: 2 Chronicles 22 narrates the wicked reign of Ahaziah (also called Azariah in the 6th verse of the present chapter; and called Jehoahaz in the previous chapter -- 2 Chronicles 21:17). The chapter concludes with the usurpation of the throne of Judah by Athaliah while Joash/Jehoash found sanctuary in the Temple.

     Ahaziah/Azariah/Jehoahaz (841 B.C.), the son of Jehoram (848-841 B.C.), came to the throne of Judah after his father died. He reigned for only a year; and his reign was evil and idolatrous because he followed the advice of his mother Athaliah (841-835 B.C.), the daughter of Omri (885-874 B.C.). He fought beside Jehoram/Joram (852-841 B.C.), King of Israel, against Hazael, King of Syria; and Jehoram/Joram was wounded. Jehoram/Joram then went to Jezreel to be healed; and Ahaziah went to visit him (1-6).
     While they were visiting, Jehu the son of Nimshi attacked Jehoram/Joram in a God-given mission to cut off the house of Ahab. This commission came from the LORD through Elisha and was delivered by an unnamed prophet whom Elisha sent to Jehu (1 Kings 9:1-13). Jehu killed Jehoram/Joram; and he also killed Ahaziah/Azariah/Jehoahaz and his family members who were there with him (7-9).
     When Athaliah heard this news, she usurped the throne of Judah by killing all of royal heirs of the house of Judah, except for Joash (later called Jehoash) who escaped when his aunt hid him. And Joash/Jehoash stayed hidden in the Temple for six years while Athaliah ruled (10-12).
     While Athaliah ruled in Judah, Jehu executed Jezebel, slaughtered the last of Ahab's descendants, killed the prophets of Baal, and reigned as king in Israel. Meanwhile, Jehoiada, the priest, bided his time waiting for the correct moment to bring Joash/Jehoash out of hiding, overthrow Athaliah, and make Joash/Jehoash king. These events are described and illustrated in the following DAWN pages: 2 Kings 8; 2 Kings 9; 2 Kings 10; 2 Kings 11.

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

     1 And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned. 2 Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Athaliah the daughter of Omri. 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly. 4 Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of Ahab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction. 5 He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramothgilead: and the Syrians smote Joram. 6 And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at Ramah, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria. And Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel, because he was sick.
     7 And the destruction of Ahaziah was of God by coming to Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab. 8 And it came to pass, that, when Jehu was executing judgment upon the house of Ahab, and found the princes of Judah, and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah, that ministered to Ahaziah, he slew them. 9 And he sought Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was hid in Samaria,) and bought him to Jehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.

9. Athaliah of Judah (2 Chronicles 22:10 - 23:21) - {841-835}

     10 But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber [bed chamber]. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahaziah,) hid him from Athaliah, so that she slew him not. 12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.
