SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: 2 Chronicles 27 describes the reign of Jotham who was successful in building, in war, and in his relationship with God.

[Traditional Patriarchal Timeline. Judges. Judges Period Chronology. Kings of Judah and Israel #1. Kings of Judah and Israel #2].

Jotham (co-regency with Uzziah/Azariah -- 748-740 B.C.), (sole reign -- 740-732 B.C.), reigned in Judah for 16 years. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and avoided the sins of his father Uzziah/Azariah (767-740 B.C.). However, the people of Judah still lived corruptly. Jotham undertook extensive repair and building projects in Jerusalem and many other places in Judah. He prevailed in war over the king of the Ammonites and received tribute for three years from him. He prevailed because God blessed him for his obedience. Additional details of his reign were written in his official court records. His son Ahaz (732-716 B.C.) succeeded him on the throne (1-9).
The reign of Jotham (co-regency with Uzziah/Azariah -- 748-740 B.C.), (sole reign -- 740-732 B.C.) wholly or partially overlapped the reigns of the last four kings of Israel: Menahem (752-742 B.C.); Pekahiah (742-740 B.C.); Pekah (740-732 B.C.); and Hoshea (732-712 B.C.). His reign also partially overlapped the ministries of the following prophets: Hosea (760-720 B.C.); Isaiah (740-681 B.C.); and Micah (737-690 B.C.). For accounts featuring these kings of Israel see the following DAWN pages: 2 Kings 15; 2 Kings 17.

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

1 Jotham was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Jerushah, the daughter of Zadok. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did: howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly. 3 He built the high gate of the house of the LORD, and on the wall of Ophel he built much. 4 Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers. 5 He fought also with the king of the Ammonites, and prevailed against them. And the children of Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of Ammon pay unto him, both the second year, and the third. 6 So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God. 7 Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. 8 He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. 9 And Jotham slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.
