I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Ezra 4 tells how and why the building of the Temple was delayed until the time of Darius. When the Jews began to rebuild the Temple, the Samaritans said that they would like to help with the building; and they said that they wanted to seek God along with the Jews. But the Samaritans were foreign settlers, having only a little Jewish blood; and they did not worship God in a pure manner, but in an idolatrous manner (2 Kings 17:25; 2 Kings 17:41). So Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the other heads of the Israeli clans refused their offer (1-3). The Samaritans then hired counselors against them and stopped their work until Darius II (423-404 B.C.) came to the throne (4-5). They did this by writing accusations to two kings against the Jews, beginning with King Ahasuerus, also called Xerxes I -- (486-464 B.C.), husband of Esther (6). Afterward, they wrote to King Artaxerxes I Longimanus (465-424 B.C.). In this second letter they asked the king to check his court records where he would find that Jerusalem was a rebellious city which would revolt when they were strong enough and would stop paying tribute. So they asked him to force the Jews to cease their repairs (7-16). Artaxerxes agreed and commanded the Jews to stop repairing the Temple (17-22). The Jews stopped and did not resume until the time of Darius II (423-404 B.C.), a hiatus of about 17 years (23-24). NOTE: Ezra (538-456 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons: Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Esther (483-473 B.C.); Nehemiah (445-425 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
