I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ] Explanation: Esther 1 contains the narrative of the great banquet of Ahasuerus and of the banishment of queen Vashti. In the days when Ahasuerus reigned, in the third year of his reign, he gave a great feast for all of his princes and servants. This lasted for 180 days and was concluded by an additional week of feasting. The accommodations were magnificent and the furnishings and vessels were opulent. Vashti the queen also made a feast for the women (1-9). On the seventh day of the concluding feast the king sent seven chamberlains to bring Vashti before him so that his guests could see her beauty. But she refused; and the king was very angry (10-12). When the king asked his advisers how he should respond to the situation, Memucan advised him to ban Vashti from his presence and to send a decree throughout his realm that all wives should obey their husbands and that all men should rule their households (13-22). NOTE: Esther (fl. 483-473 B.C.) was contemporary with the following Biblical persons:; Nehemiah (served 445-425 B.C.); Joel (580-450 B.C. -- if this late date applies, rather than a date in the 9th century B.C.); Haggai (520 B.C.); Zechariah (520-518 B.C.); Ezra (538-456 B.C.). However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.
