SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: In Psalm 67, the Psalmist prays for God's mercy and exalts him for his saving, judging, and governing ways in the earth.
     The Psalm falls into two main categories: it is Chiastic, a form in which elements in the first half repeat in reverse order in the second half. It is also a Communal Psalm of Thanksgiving. These terms are explained more fully in the links provided in the section titled "Thematically and Chronologically Related Scriptures."
     PRAYER FOR BLESSING. The Psalmist asks God to be merciful to us and to make his face to shine upon us. He asks this so that God's ways and his salvation may be known upon the earth (1-2).
          REFRAIN: PRAISE GOD. He expresses his desire that the people will praise God (3).
               CALL ON THE NATIONS TO REJOICE IN GOD'S RULE. He calls upon the nations be glad and sing for joy because God will judge and govern righteously (4).
          REFRAIN: PRAISE GOD. The Psalmist again asks that the people might praise God (5).
     PROSPECT OF BLESSING. He then notes that the earth will yield its increase when God blesses us. Then the earth will fear him (6-7).
                    NOTE. The structure presented above is based on The Literary Structure of the Old Testament, David A. Dorsey, 1999, p. 180.

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

THE PSALTER:

(SONGS FOR COVENANT WORSHIP)
Deliverance from Sinners and from Sin

Nearly all the Psalms (except Psalm 90) were written during the 612 year period
from the time of David around 1016 B. C. to the close of the Canon in about 404 B. C.
Psalm 90, according to its superscription, was written by Moses; this may have been around 1406 B. C.

1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, [Transposed To Psalm 66 ] *

A Psalm or Song.

God be merciful unto us,
and bless us;
and cause his face shine upon us;
Selah.
2 That thy way may be known upon earth,
thy saving health among all nations.

3 Let the people praise thee, O God;
let all the people praise thee.

5 Let the people praise thee, O God;
let all the people praise thee.

6 Then shall the earth yield her increase;
and God,
even our own God,
shall bless us.
7 God shall bless us;
and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

1 To the chief Musician, [Transposed From Psalm 68:1 ] *

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
