[ Illustration: The First Image reflects the natural glories which the LORD created as mentioned in the first stanza of today's Psalm. The Second Image shows a small group of nomads. I've chose this to represent the generation which dwindled and died in the wilderness due to the LORD's judgment. Only two of that generation survived; but a great multitude (perhaps as many as two million) of the second generation entered the Promised Land. ]

SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: In Psalm 95, the Psalmist [Hebrews 4:7] twice calls his readers to worship the LORD, appending various reasons in each of the two stanzas of the Psalm.
David invites his readers to join him in singing with a joyful noise (a ringing shout of joy) to the LORD, the rock of our salvation, to come before him with thanksgiving and joy, singing psalms, because the LORD is greater than all gods. The LORD controls the depths of the earth, the strength of the hills, the sea, and the dry land. So again David invites us to worship the LORD because he is our God; and we are the sheep of his pasture (1-7a).
We must not harden our hearts as the rebels did in the wilderness and suffered 40 years of judgment, never entering into the LORD's rest (7b-11).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

Psalm Detailed Outline

THE PSALTER:

(SONGS FOR COVENANT WORSHIP)
Deliverance from Sinners and from Sin

Nearly all the Psalms (except Psalm 90) were written during the 612 year period
from the time of David around 1016 B. C. to the close of the Canon in about 404 B. C.
Psalm 90, according to its superscription, was written by Moses; this may have been around 1406 B. C.

God's Greatness Among the Nations

Psalm 95
Worship the LORD, and don't be hard hearted like those in the Exodus.

Map 1: Bible Nations | Map 2: Empire of David and Solomon Map 3: Kingdoms of Judah and Israel | Post Exile Chronology.

1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD:
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving,
and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
3 For the LORD is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the deep places of the earth:
the strength of the hills is his also.
5 The sea is his,
and he made it:
and his hands formed the dry land.
6 O come,
let us worship and bow down:
let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
7 For he is our God;
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.

To day if ye will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your heart,
as in the provocation,
and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
9 When your fathers tempted me,
proved me,
and saw my work.
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation,
and said, It is a people that do err in their heart,
and they have not known my ways:
11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath
that they should not enter into my rest.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
