[ Illustration: Today's illustration depicts a splendid procession for the purpose of worship, such as David may have had in mind when he wrote today's Psalm. ]

     Explanation: In Psalm 122, David speaks of the blessings of worship in Jerusalem at the Tabernacle.
     David said that he was glad when his companions asked him to go to the house of the LORD (the Tabernacle) with them (1).
     David anticipated the time when he would stand within the city limits of Jerusalem; and he spoke of its glories -- its structure is unified; it is the place where the tribes of Israel gather to pay respect to the law ("testimony") of God and to give thanks to him; and it is the place where the thrones of judgment of king David's house are set up (2-5).
     Therefore, David told his readers to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, promising that those who love Jerusalem will prosper. And, taking his own advice, David (for the sake of his companions) invokes peace and prosperity upon Jerusalem; and (for the sake of the House of God -- the Tabernacle) he pledges to seek the welfare of Jerusalem (6-9).

THE PSALTER:

Deliverance from Sinners and from Sin

Nearly all the Psalms (except Psalm 90) were written during the 612 year period

from the time of David around 1016 B. C. to the close of the Canon in about 404 B. C.

Psalm 90, according to its superscription, was written by Moses; this may have been around 1406 B. C.

Psalm 122

We will worship and find peace in the LORD's house in Jerusalem.

I was glad when they said unto me,
Let us go into the house of the LORD.

² Our feet shall stand within thy gates,
O Jerusalem.
³ Jerusalem is builded
as a city that is compact [joined] together:
⁴ Whither the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD,
unto the testimony of Israel,
to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.
⁵ For there are set thrones of judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.

⁶ Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
they shall prosper that love thee.
⁷ Peace be within thy walls,
and prosperity within thy palaces.
⁸ For my brethren and companions' sakes,
I will now say,
Peace be within thee.
⁹ Because of the house of the LORD our God
I will seek thy good.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
