SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: In Psalm 148, the Psalmist invites all of creation, animate and inanimate, men and animals, to praise the LORD their creator for his power, his glory, and his blessings. This exhortation was carried out in it's fullest expression, to date, on the occasion of the nativity of Christ.
     (a). Everything in Heaven Should Praise the LORD. The Psalmist calls everything and everyone everywhere to praise the LORD. He begins with the heavens in the first part of the Psalm, exhorting them and their inhabitants to praise the LORD; and in the second part he exhorts the lower regions and their inhabitants to praise the LORD. He begins by calling for praise to come from heaven for the LORD. He calls for praise from God's angels, his hosts (armies), the sun, the moon, the stars, the heavens of heavens, and the waters (clouds) above the heavens. He is worthy of their praise because he created them and established them with a fixed decree (1-6).
     (b). Everything in Heaven Should Praise the LORD. The Psalmist then turns his attention to the lower regions, calling for praise from the earth, the ferocious beasts of the sea (or land), the depths of the sea, the fire, the hail, the snow, the vapor, the stormy wind, the mountains, the hills, the fruit trees, the cedars, the beasts, the cattle, the creeping things, the birds, the kings, the people, the princes, the judges, the young men, the maidens, the old men, and the children (7-13a).
     (c). Everyone Among God's People Should Praise the LORD. He is worthy of their praise because of his excellent name, his glory, and his empowering of his people who praise him and live near to him (13b-14).
                    NOTE. The structure presented above is based on The Literary Structure of the Old Testament, David A. Dorsey, 1999, p. 185. Today's Psalm has a synthetic parallelism (ideas in the Psalm match one another, but each adds ideas to the others).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

for he commanded,
and they were created.
6 He hath also stablished them for ever and ever:
he hath made a decree which shall not pass.

7 Praise the LORD from the earth,
ye dragons,
and all deeps:

for his name alone is excellent;
his glory is above the earth and heaven.
14 He also exalteth the horn of his people,
the praise of all his saints;
even of the children of Israel,
a people near unto him.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
