     [ Illustration: Today's painting illustrates a distressed donkey chased by thoughtlessly cruel children. By contrast, verse 10 says that the righteous are not cruel to their animals -- they care for the life of the beasts which they own. The point is that an attitude of caring or an attitude of cruelty carry over into all aspects of life, as shown by the latter part of the verse which says that even "the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." ]

SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: Proverbs 12 contains a series of proverbs on various moral concerns.
     The subjects of today's chapter are these:
          Love of instruction gives knowledge; but hatred of reproof makes one brutish (1);
          The LORD favors the good man and condemns the man of wicked devices (2);
          The wicked are not established, but the righteous are unmoved (3);
          A virtuous woman brings honor to her husband; but a shameful wife is like rottenness in his bones (4);
          The righteous have just thoughts; the wicked have deceitful counsel (5);
          The counsel of the upright delivers others from the bloodthirsty (6);
          The wicked are overthrown; the righteous stand (7);
          A man of good sense is commended; a man with a twisted mind is despised (8);
          A despised man with a servant is better than one who honors himself but lacks bread (9);
          A righteous man regards the life of his beast; but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel (10);
          Sensible work is profitable; but worthless pursuits are not sensible (11);
          The wicked covet plunder; but the righteous bear fruit (12);
          An evil man snares himself with his lips; but the righteous escape from trouble (13);
          Good will come from the fruit of the mouth; and a man's work comes back to him (14);
          Fools think they are right; but the wise listen to advice (15);
          A fool expresses his wrath; but a prudent man covers the shame of others (16);
          Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence; but a false witness utters deceit (17);
          Rash words are like swords; but the tongue of the wise brings healing (18);
          Truthful lips endure forever; but a lying tongue is only for a moment (19);
          Deceivers devise evil; peacemakers have joy (20);
          No ill befalls the righteous; but the wicked are filled with trouble (21);
          The LORD abominates liars; but he delights in the faithful (22);
          A prudent man is filled with hidden knowledge; but a fool proclaims foolishness (23);
          The diligent rule; but the slothful come under tribute (24)
          A heavy heart is depressed; but a good word makes it glad (25)
          The righteous is more excellent than [or a superior guide to] his neighbor; but the wicked seduces his neighbor (26)
          The slothful will not cook his game; but the possessions of the diligent are precious to him (27)
          The way of righteousness is life; there is no death in it (28).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

Proverbs Detailed Outline

The Proverbs are grouped into two Collections, each having 2 Sections, with various Sub-Sections. (See the Detailed Outline above and below).

1. Collection 1 - Proverbs of Solomon & the Wise (Solomon's Collection)
     (1:1 - 24:34) - 968 - 946 B.C., Israel
     A. Section 1 - Proverbs of Solomon (1:1 - 22:16)
          1). Sub-Section 1 - "The Proverbs of Solomon, Son of David" (1:1 - 9:18)
               a). Purpose: To teach the fear of the LORD, the beginning of wisdom (1:1-7, esp. 7)
               b). Precepts: The seductions of folly verses the attractions of wisdom (1:8 - 9:18)
                    (1). Part 1: (1:8 - 4:27)
                         (a). Folly: Wicked Companions Bring Death (1:8-19)
                         (b). Wisdom: Wisdom Brings Life and reward (1:20 - 4:27)
                    (2). Part 2: (5:1 - 6:19)
                         (a). Folly: Adulterous Women Bring Suffering and Death (5:1-15)
                         (b). Wisdom: Safety from Marital Love + Diligence in Wisdom (5:16 - 6:19)
                    (3). Part 3: (6:20 - 9:18)
                         (a). Folly: Adulterous Women Bring Deceit & Death (6:20 - 7:27)
                         (b). Wisdom: It Brings Favor from the LORD, Kings, & Rulers (8:1 - 9:18)
          2). Sub-Section 2 - "The Proverbs of Solomon" (10:1 - 22:16)
                    Note: This section builds on the previous section by offering a series of contrasts between the wise and the foolish and between wisdom and folly in general.
                    Having offered a strong persuasion in the previous section to follow wisdom, the author now shows what wisdom is in daily life.
                    In the latter sections the proverbs are generally arranged individually, and groupings are less frequent and mainly shorter.

Proverbs 12

Map 1: Bible Nations | Map 2: Empire of David and Solomon Map 3: Kingdoms of Judah and Israel | Post Exile Chronology.

1 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge:
but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

2 A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD:
but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

3 A man shall not be established by wickedness:
but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband:
but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

5 The thoughts of the righteous are right:
but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

6 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood:
but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not:
but the house of the righteous shall stand.

8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom:
but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

9 He that is despised, and hath a servant,
is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.

10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast:
but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

11 He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread:
but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.

12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men:
but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.

13 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips:
but the just shall come out of trouble.

14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth:
and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.

15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes:
but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

16 A fool's wrath is presently known:
but a prudent man covereth shame.

17 He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness:
but a false witness deceit.

18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword:
but the tongue of the wise is health.

19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever:
but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil:
but to the counsellors of peace is joy.

21 There shall no [not any] evil happen to the just:
but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.

22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD:
but they that deal truly are his delight.

23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge:
but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule:
but the slothful shall be under tribute.

25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop:
but a good word maketh it glad.

26 The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour:
but the way of the wicked seduceth them.

27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting:
but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

28 In the way of righteousness is life;
and in the pathway [road trampled] thereof there is no death.
