SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

     Explanation: Isaiah 47 proclaims the doom of Babylon and its magicians. The chapter begins by calling upon Babylon to sit dethroned in the dust, for its shame will soon be seen (1-4).
     They should sit silent in the darkness since they will no longer be called "the lady of kingdoms" because they have shown no mercy to God's people (5-7).
     The nation has dwelt securely, without care; but, like a stricken woman, it will loose its children and become a widow in a single day (8-9).
     It trusted in its wisdom and knowledge; but it will suddenly be destroyed (10-11).
     Its enchantments, sorceries, astrologers, stargazers, and monthly prognosticators will fail to save them (12-13).
     Indeed, they will be like stubble which is unable to deliver itself (or anyone) from the flame (14-15).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

2. Post-Exile: The Blessing & Judgment Cycles ( 40:1 - 66:24 ) - 701-681 B.C., Israel
(These 8 groups of prophecies alternate between blessings on Israel and judgment on God's enemies.)

A. Cycle 1 (40:1 - 48:22)

Judgment (46:1 - 48:22)

a. Judgment on God's Enemy Babylon (Continued) -- Destruction (46:1 - 47:15)

1 Come down,
and sit in the dust,
O virgin daughter of Babylon,
sit on the ground:
there is no throne,
O daughter of the Chaldeans:
for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
2 Take the millstones,
and grind meal:
uncover thy locks,
make bare the leg,
uncover the thigh,
pass over the rivers.
3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered,
yea,
thy shame shall be seen:
I will take vengeance,
and I will not meet thee as a man.
4 As for our redeemer,
the LORD of hosts is his name,
the Holy One of Israel.

5 Sit thou silent,
and get thee into darkness,
O daughter of the Chaldeans:
for thou shalt no more be called,
The lady of kingdoms.
6 I was wroth with my people,
I have polluted mine inheritance,
and given them into thine hand:
thou didst shew them no mercy;
upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.
7 And thou saidst,
I shall be a lady for ever:
so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart,
neither didst remember the latter end of it.

8 Therefore hear now this,
thou that art given to pleasures,
that dwellest carelessly,
that sayest in thine heart,
I am,
and none else beside me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
neither shall I know the loss of children:
9 But these two things shall come to thee
in a moment
in one day,
the loss of children,
and widowhood:
they shall come upon thee in their perfection
for the multitude of thy sorceries,
and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness:
thou hast said,
None seeth me.
Thy wisdom
and thy knowledge,
it hath perverted thee;
and thou hast said in thine heart,
I am,
and none else beside me.
11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee;
thou shalt not know from whence it riseth:
and mischief shall fall upon thee;
thou shalt not be able to put it off:
and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly,
which thou shalt not know.

12 Stand now with thine enchantments,
and with the multitude of thy sorceries,
wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth;
if so be thou shalt be able to profit,
if so be thou mayest prevail.
13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels.
Let now the astrologers [charters of heaven],
the stargazers [contemplators of stars],
the monthly prognosticators,
stand up,
and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
