SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: Jeremiah 1 begins with an introduction to the prophet Jeremiah and the kings who reigned during the years in which his book was written (1-3).
Next is an account of his calling to be a prophet: the LORD begins by telling Jeremiah that he knew him and ordained him to be a prophet to the nations before he was born; but Jeremiah said he could not do it because he was a child; but the LORD countered his objection by telling him that he would be with him to deliver him; and he touched Jeremiah's mouth and put his words into his mouth and said, "See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant" (4-10).
Then the LORD showed him two visions. The first was a rod (or branch) of an almond tree which symbolized the haste with which the LORD would fulfill his word (11-12).
The second vision was a seething pot facing north which symbolized a great invasion of many nations from the north gathered against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah because of their idolatry (13-16).
And, as a final reassurance to Jeremiah, The LORD told him he was going to make him a defended city and a brazen wall against those he was sent to rebuke; and they would fight against him but would not prevail because the LORD would protect him (17-19).

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

1. Prophecies for Judah + Jerusalem's Fall & the Aftermath

(1:1 - 45:5 ) - 627 - 560 B.C., Israel

A. Jeremiah's Call (1)

1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: 2 To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

6 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot [not I know to] speak: for I am a child. 7 But the LORD said unto me,

Say not,
I am a child:
for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee,
and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
8 Be not afraid of their faces:
for I am with thee to deliver thee,
saith the LORD.

9 Then the LORD put forth [this] his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me,

11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. 12 Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

13 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward [from the face of] the north. 14 Then the LORD said unto me, Out of [from] the north an evil break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. 15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one [a man] his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. 16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. 17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them [this] all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them. 18 For [I], behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. 19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.
