SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: In Ezekiel 2, the LORD tells Ezekiel to stand upright and delivers a book to him which contained lamentations, and mourning, and woe. As a priest, Ezekiel would have been around the sacred books and may have handled them.
In a similar way, in the painting above, a priest holds a book, a Gradual (a hymnal for the Mass, i.e., Communion). But Ezekiel was about to do something unusual with the book which the LORD gave him -- for in the next chapter, at God's command, he ate the book.

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

2). The Commission: To be a Watchman (2:1 - 3:23)

1 And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee. 2 And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard [this] -- him that spake unto me. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day. 4 For they are impudent [severe of face] children and stiffhearted [strong of heart]. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD. 5 And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious [bitter] house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them. 6 And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks [faces], though they be a rebellious [bitter] house. 7 And thou shalt speak [this] my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious [bitter].

8 But thou, son of man, hear [this] what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious [bitter] like that rebellious [bitter] house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee. 9 And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein; 10 And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe.
