[ Illustration: Today's First Image shows the joy when the Ark of the Covenant came into Solomon's Temple. By contrast, however, the Ark will not be in the new Temple (i.e., the new order of things), as mentioned in the discussion above. The Second Image shows a representation of Ezekiel's Temple based on extensive research. It is plausible but not necessarily definitive since the developers have revised the model and still have disagreements. This is inevitable since Ezekiel does not present complete descriptions of the Temple. Click the image for a full size version, or open it in a new tab. ]

SPECIAL NOTE:

[ I will again be working through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. I will be adding links, resources, images, and the like, upgrading the former work-through which began with the 2013-10-12 posting which can be found, along with the full Genesis to Revelation postings, in the Archive Page. Postings will be at midnight Eastern Time, as I am able. However, no chapters will be skipped, even though a posting may be late. And all postings will be housed in the Archive Page. ]

Explanation: In Ezekiel 42, the LORD brings Ezekiel to the outer court. The chambers are described in the first part of the chapter (42:1-12); and their use is described in the latter part of the chapter (42:13-20). The chambers or stations were for the use of the priests as they did their duties in the Temple and were for sacred meals for them and their families. It is just such chambers that Jesus had in mind when he said "In my Father's house are many mansions" (John 14:2); (see Leviticus 6:16, Leviticus 6:26, Leviticus 24:9, and Leviticus 3:2 with 1 Kings 6:5; Ezra 8:29; and Jeremiah 35:2). Jesus called these chambers "mansions" (KJV), literally "dwelling places" or "stations" ('monai' in the Greek), by which he conveyed the idea that these chambers were places to stay or remain, with the implication that we would be always close to God. The painting above depicts the High Priests and the Levites bringing the Ark of the Covenant into the Temple, which was an occasional duty if the ark had been removed for some reason; however, no such removal or return is mentioned in Ezekiel in the visionary temple. The ark in not represented as being part of the Temple. This implies that the ark does not have a place in this Temple; and what Ezekiel implies, Jeremiah confirms explicitly: "And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more." (Jeremiah 3:16).
The Priest's Chambers (1-14). Ezekiel's guide takes him to the Outer Court of the Temple and, in the first 9 verses, measures various features and shows him doors, a pavement, galleries, and chambers. As shown in verses 10-14, The priests had holy chambers in the southern and in the northern parts of the Outer Court. The priests used these for sacred meals (the meal offering, the sin offering, and the trespass offering), and they used them to change into and out of their sacred garments. Between the two sets of chambers was a wall (v. 7) possibly for privacy as the priests changed their garments. These chambers were on three levels (verses 5-6). The upper chambers (v. 5, KJV) were "shorter" than (i.e., recessed from) the lower chambers. Some, however, with little justification from the grammar or from the context (41:6; 42:5), say that the upper chambers protruded or projected from the chambers below.
The Temple's Outer Precincts: Its Outer Enclosing Wall (42:15-20). The guide measured the outermost wall of the Temple grounds. It was five hundred reeds long on all four sides. The purpose of the wall (v. 20) was to separate the sanctuary from the profane place, or the holy from the common.

RESOURCES

PLEASE NOTE: Use the resources on this and other sites thoughtfully, particularly the commentaries and encyclopedias. I have attempted to list conservative, scholarly resources. However, some providers use liberal or liberal-influenced commentaries such as the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges (in Bible Hub). Such commentaries are undoubtedly included by the provider for the wealth of useful information and comments which they provide. By consulting several commentaries, it should be fairly easy to sort out the wheat from the chaff. If, however, you would like personal assistance, write to me at AD LIB ARTS EMAIL.

3). Renewal: The New Temple and the New Land (40:1 - 48:35)

a). The New Temple (Continued) (40:1 - 44:31)

1 Then he bought me forth into the utter court, the way toward the north: and he bought me into the chamber that was over against the separate place, and which was before the building toward the north. 2 Before [Toward the face of] the length of an hundred cubits was the north door, and the breadth was fifty cubits. 3 Over against the twenty cubits which were for the inner court, and over against the pavement which was for the utter court, was gallery against [toward the face of] gallery in three stories [in threes].

4 And before the chambers was a walk [a walkway] of ten cubits breadth inward, a way of one cubit; and their doors toward the north.

5 Now the upper chambers were shorter: for the galleries were higher than these, than the lower, and than the middlemost of the building. 6 For they were in three stories, but had not [nothing of] pillars as the pillars of the courts: therefore the building was straitened [was recessed] more than [from] the lowest and the middlemost from the ground. 7 And the wall that was without over against the chambers, toward the utter court on the forepart of the chambers, the length thereof was fifty cubits. 8 For the length of the chambers that were in the utter court was fifty cubits: and, lo, before [upon the face of] the temple were an hundred cubits. 9 And from under these chambers was the entry on the east side, as one goeth into them from the utter court.

10 The chambers were in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east, over against the separate place, and over against [and toward the face of] the building. 11 And the way before them was like the appearance of the chambers which were toward the north, as long as they, and as broad as they: and all their goings out were both according to their fashions, and according to their doors. 12 And according to the doors of the chambers that were toward the south was a door in the head of the way, even the way directly before the wall toward the east, as one entereth into them.

13 Then said he unto me, The north chambers and the south chambers, which are before [toward the face of] the separate place, they be holy chambers, where the priests that approach unto the LORD shall eat the most holy things [holy of the holies]: there shall they lay the most holy things [holy of the holies], and the meat offering, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering; for the place is holy. 14 When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.

15 Now when he had made an end of [this] measuring the inner house, he bought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east, and measured it round about [circling, circling].

16 He measured the east side with the measuring reed, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about [circling].

17 He measured the north side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about [circling]. 18 measured [this] the south side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed.

19 He turned about to the west side, and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed.

20 He measured it by the four sides: it had a wall round about [circling circling], five hundred reeds long, and five hundred broad, to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place.
