Explanation: During the months before his final arrival in Jerusalem, a rich young ruler of the Jews approached him and asked what he could do to inherit eternal life. Jesus told him to keep the commandments, and the ruler asked which commandments. Jesus quoted the commandments relating to one's relationship with his fellow men. When the ruler said he had kept these things from his youth, Jesus told him there was one thing he lacked; he told him to sell all he had, give it to the poor, and follow him. But the ruler was very sorrowful because his riches were so great; and so he departed from Jesus. In response, Jesus said it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for those who trusted in riches to enter the Kingdom of God. When the disciples asked how, then, anyone could be saved, Jesus said that with men this was impossible, but that with God all things are possible. This incident prompted Peter to ask what he and the others who had forsaken all to follow Jesus would receive. Jesus answered that they would receive blessings and struggles in this life and eternal life in the next life. He further said that many of the first (like the rich young ruler) would be last, and many of the last (like his disciples) would be first. He further elaborated that idea in Matthew 20:1-16. In that passage he told a parable about the ruler of a vineyard who hired workers throughout the day up till an hour before the end of the day. The last to be hired were paid the same as those who were hired first, because the vineyard owner had the right to do what he desired with his money whether it pleased others or not. This illustrated the principle of the first being last and the last being first.

Matthew 19:16 - 20:16; Mark 10:17-31; Luke 18:18-30

Matthew 19:16 - 20:16; Mark 10:17-31; Luke 18:18-30      Matthew 19:16 And, behold, Mark 10:17 when he was gone forth into the way there came [Luke 18:18 a certain ruler] running, and knelt to him, and asked him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, [Mark 10:17 that I may inherit eternal life?] Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why call you me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if you will enter into life, keep the commandments. Matthew 19:18 He said unto him, Which? Jesus said,[Mark 10:19 You know the commandments,] You shall do no murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, [Mark 10:19 Defraud not, Honour your father and mother.] Matthew 19:19 and, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Matthew 19:20 The young man said unto him, [Mark 10:20 Master, ] All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, [Mark 10:21 beholding him (he) loved him, and said unto him, One thing you lack:] [Matthew 19:21 If you will be perfect,] go your way, sell whatsoever you have, [Luke 18:22 and distribute unto the poor,] and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Matthew 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying [Mark 10:22 he was sad], (and) he went away [Luke 18:23 very] sorrowful [Mark 10:22 (and) grieved]: [Luke 18:23 for he was very rich.] (and) had great possessions. Luke 18:24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, [Mark 10:23 Jesus looked round about, and said unto his disciples, [Matthew 19:23 Verily I say unto you,] That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.] Mark 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again, and said unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! Matthew 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Matthew 19:25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed [Mark 10:26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves,] Who then can be saved? Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, [Mark 10:27 And looking upon them said,] With men this is impossible; [Mark 10:27 but not with God: for with God all things are possible.]
Matthew 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed you; what shall we have therefore? Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, [Mark 10:29 There is no man that has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake [Matthew 19:29 (and) for my name's sake,] and the gospel's, [Luke 18:29 (and) for the kingdom of God's sake,] [Mark 10:30 But he shall receive [Luke 18:30 manifold more]: a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come [Matthew 19:29 shall inherit everlasting life.] You which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
Matthew 20:1-16 1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go you also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said unto them, Why stand you here all the day idle? 7 They said unto him, Because no man has hired us. He said unto them, Go you also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall you receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard said unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and you have made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do you no wrong: did not you agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that yours is, and go your way: I will give unto this last, even as unto you. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good? 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen.
