Explanation: On Thursday of the Passion Week, after Jesus concluded his final discourse to his disciples and had an intercessory prayer for them, they sang a hymn and went to the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed in agony as his disciples slept in a torpor of depression. Through his intense prayers, Jesus gained the mental, emotional, and spiritual strength he needed to endure what was coming upon him. As he concluded his prayers, he woke his disciples while Judas Iscariot approached leading those who would arrest him.

Matthew 26:30, 36-46; Mark 14:26, 32-42; Luke 22:39-46; John 18:1

John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words [Matthew 26:30a when they had sung an hymn], he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, [Luke 22:39a And he came out, and went, as he was accustomed, to the mount of Olives;] where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples [Luke 22:39b followed him]. Matthew 26:36a Then came Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, Luke 22:40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that you enter not into temptation Mark 14:32b and he said to his disciples, Sit you here, Matthew 26:36b while I go and pray yonder. Mark 14:33 And he took with him Peter and James and John [Matthew 26:37b the two sons of Zebedee], and began [Matthew 26:37c to be sorrowful,] to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; Matthew 26:38 Then said he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry you here, and watch with me.
Mark 14:35 And he went forward a little [Matthew 26:39b further], [Luke 22:41b about a stone's cast, and kneeled down], and fell on the ground [Matthew 26:39c on his face,], and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. Mark 14:36 And he said, [Matthew 26:39d O my Father,] Abba, Father, all things are possible unto you; [Matthew 26:39d if it be possible], [Luke 22:42a if you be willing,] take away this cup; [Matthew 26:39e let this cup pass from me:] nevertheless not what I will, but what you will; [Luke 22:42b not my will, but yours, be done]. Luke 22:43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22:45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, Matthew 26:40 And he came unto the disciples, and found them asleep, and said unto Peter, [Matthew 24:37b Simon, sleep you?] What, could you not watch with me one hour? Luke 22:46a And said unto them, Luke 22:46b Why sleep you? [Matthew 26:41a Watch], rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation. Matthew 26:41b the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:42 He went away again the second time, [Mark 14:39b and prayed, and spoke the same words], saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, your will be done. Mark 14:40 And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither knew they what to answer him.
Matthew 26:44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Mark 14:41 And he came [Matthew 26:45a to his disciples] the third time, and said unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; [Matthew 26:45b behold, the hour is at hand]; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Mark 14:42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrays me is at hand.
