     Explanation: In Psalm 98 the Psalmist, perhaps David, called upon all of creation to praise God for his wonders in creation and for his grace and salvation. The author and the occasion are not specified; but this Psalm plus Psalms 96, 97, and 100 have significant parallels with David's Psalm which is recorded in 1 Chronicles 16. This fact may give us the author (David) and the occasion (the dedication of the Tabernacle) for all four of these Psalms. Today's Psalm has a strong emphasis on praising the LORD with music. All of creation is to join in, making the cosmos and all that is within it a kind of choir, mirrored by today's painting.

     The Psalmist, perhaps David, tells us and all of creation to sing to the LORD because of the marvelous (incomparable) things which he has done and the victories which he has won. He revealed his salvation to the heathen by showing his mercy and truth to Israel -- possibly a reference to the deliverance of Israel from Egypt (1-3). We should make a joyful noise (a shout of joy) to the LORD using all kinds of musical instruments (4-6). The sea and everything in it, the rivers, and the hills should be joyful because the LORD is coming to judge the earth with righteousness and equity (7-9).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FOUR OF FIVE:

Psalms 90-106.

Psalm 98

1 A Psalm. *

O sing unto the LORD a new song;
for he hath done marvellous things:
his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
2 The LORD hath made known his salvation:
his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.
3 He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel:
all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth:
make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp;
with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.
6 With trumpets and sound of cornet
make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.

7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof;
the world, and they that dwell therein.
8 Let the floods clap their hands:
let the hills be joyful together 9 Before the LORD;
for he cometh to judge the earth:
with righteousness shall he judge the world,
and the people with equity.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
