Explanation: In Psalm 111 the Psalmist exalts the works of the LORD. Today's painting depicts the apotheosis of a city (Gdansk) -- a city raised to its supreme height. In similar fashion, today's Psalm reveals that the LORD brings his people to their highest point of development -- ruling over the nations, being redeemed, partaking of an everlasting covenant, filled with wisdom.

The Psalmist says that he will praise God with his whole heart among God's people (1). The rest of the Psalm tells us why he offers his praise to the LORD. The LORD's works are great; all who have pleasure in them seek them out (2). His works are honorable and glorious; and his righteousness endures forever (3). He has made his works to be remembered; he is gracious and filled with compassion (4). He gives food to all who fear him; he will always be mindful of his covenant (5). He has shown his power to his people; he will give his people the heritage of the heathen (6). His works are true and just; his commandments are sure -- they stand forever; and they are done in truth and uprightness (7-8). He redeemed his people; he commanded his covenant forever; his name is holy and revered (9). The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. All who do his commandments have good understanding. His praise endures forever (10).

THE PSALTER:

BOOK FIVE OF FIVE:

Psalms 107-150.

Psalm 111

1 Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.
2 The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3 His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.
6 He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

* NOTE: On Opening and Closing Comments in the Psalms.
[Some commentators take the Psalm in Habakkuk 3 to be a standard model for the Psalms.
Habakkuk's Psalm begins with the name of the composer (Habakkuk) and a musical notation ("upon Shigionoth").
It closes with a dedication or a "send to" notice ("To the chief singer on my stringed instruments").
I have arranged similar material, where it is found in the Psalter, in accord with the model in Habakkuk.]
